Process in the Selection of Employee

Personnel selection refers to filling up vacancies from competent candidates. In other words, it is a process of employees While making selection

the following two approaches can be adopted Approaches of Selection:

1. Positive Approach – According to this approach
the qualification, training and experience of applicants is matched with the minimum and desirable qualification and the selection of the best out of qualifying candidate is made.
In this way those with lesser qualifications are automatically rejected.

2. Negative Approach – This approach rejects the candidates with lesser qualification and experience. Unsuitable candidates are rejected on certain grounds and at the end the most suitable candidate remains, who is selected.


Selection Policy

Selection policy is a part of the company’s
Recruitment Policy. Selection Policy deals with subjects like recruitment of new employees, promotion of the existing employees, transfer, demotion, lay-offs, retirement, training and growth of the employees etc.

In Selection Policy, the order of selection, various
types of exams the subjects to be tested, their importance and weightage to be given to the subjects in selection, interview etc. all are mentioned. The formation of the Selection
Board, internal and external means of recruitment, discrimination and preferences, the criteria for selection are the main points of a company’s Selection Policy. The Selection policy of a company cannot go against the general policies, principles and orders of the company and neither can it be anti the general public policies, the constitution of the country and the law of the land. The policies should necessarily be clear, flexible, justifiable etc. The policies should be properly published and publicised. After periodically testing the policies they should be properlyncorrected and amended. Policies are not mere eye wash instead they should be strictly followed.

Ideally a Selection Policy should be based on the
following principles-

1. The task of selection should be given in capablebhands. Instead of one man doing it, the job should be done by a Selection Board.

2. Selection should be done as per the decided norms.

3.Both internal and external sources should be used THE for selection.

4.Rather than the individual his qualifications should be given preference in selection.

5.Different selection procedures should be used for different posts.

6.Every step of the selection procedure should be
considered important.

7.The Selection Policy should be in accordance with the general policy of the company.

8.The law of the land should be kept in mind during
selection.

9.The Selection Policy should not be rigid but flexible.

10.The Selection Policy should be simple, clear and justifiable.

11.Besides being employment oriented a Selection Policy should also be helpful in vocational guidance.
